What Is Fruit-based Permaculture?

Well let’s start with “What is Permaculture?” The word Permaculture stands for permanent agriculture (or in a broader sense, culture). For something to be permanent it needs to be sustainable. So what does being sustainable mean? Permaculturalists define a sustainable system as one that “produces more energy than it consumes, enough in surplus to maintain and replace the system and its component parts over their lifetime.” Nature is abundant with examples of such systems and it is through observing nature that we can become sustainable.

In a nutshell, fruit-based Permaculture is a refinement of the traditional system, in order to be more relevant to a fruitful raw lifestyle. We believe the food forest to be the essence of the movement as it has been developed through the observation of natural ecosystems. This kind of observational thinking is often what leads one to a raw lifestyle in the first place. After all, we have yet to find examples in nature of an animal that prepares its food over a fire and then spices it with herbs (although we would welcome the chance to observe such a scene)!! We see a system that functions without the domestication/exploitation of animals by attracting native animals to perform the functions that the forest requires and by using other techniques of cultivation. By observing nature we can see how all of the elements work in harmony with each other, clarifying where we, as humans, fit in with the natural ecosystem.

Permaculture has a saying: “The problem is the solution.” The three main destructive forces, and thus problems, on Earth at present are: pollution, deforestation and soil erosion. The solution is in implementing food forests that mimic natural phenomena thus eradicating these problems in one swoop. Ecosystems of forests provide the proper growing environment for fruit trees, creating fertile soil and negate the use polluting chemicals. By observing the interaction between plants and animals within their environment, we can recreate natural systems that benefit not only people, but the planet as well.

A fruit-based system is the epitome of sustainability because it requires so little maintenance for the abundance (Frubundance) it creates. Fruit trees offer the most delicious output for the amount of input, and this satisfies one of the golden rules of a Permaculture system. So if you are looking for the whole picture, look no further, its all right here!

Fred Patenuade's book: Almost Raw Low Fat Vegan

Thanks to Fred I spent an enjoyable Sunday reading the whole book and loved all his descriptions of the crazy people in the raw world with all the perfectionistic ideas we love to believe and that often do not really work.

I have been trying so hard to stay on 811 and falling off the wagon, obsessing about failure and then going back for more. What a relief to find an alternative way to transition.

I really like the idea of eating a healthy low fat vegan diet…

New Life

Since delving into a low, fat, raw vegan lifestyle and permaculture, my life has become kinda crazy.

This winter was really difficult. Standing outside in the snow just to get 30 minutes of snow wasn't really my idea of a good time.

Maine has been wonderful for numerous reasons though. Because of the large quantity of organic farmers, homesteaders, permaculturists, biodynamic practictioners, and various other alternative lifestyle livers, I have been able to learn about all of…
